Type of Scars - Identify your Scar

by Martha Fitzharris

Everyone has a different opinion to what a scar is. Because of this you may bump into people that will freely talk about their scar and even show it to you with pride while others will shy away from the public eye and keep their scar hidden. But no matter what these people believe, there is one undeniable truth- a scar is the body's way of protecting itself.

A scar can also affect children. In fact; children are vulnerable to scarring because young epidermal and dermal layers tend to overcompensate for an injury. In 2008, a group of scientists conducted a study showing an increase in the rate of scarring as we aged.

A Short List for all Scar Victims

A scar is as different as the person it affects. That's why each scar falls into a different category. Here is a helpful list explaining the different types of scars that may affect you:

*Childhood scars: These scars appear during younger years due to childhood incidents such as fall off the monkey bars or off their bike, etc. This type of scar is particularly different from adult scars because they will change as the child's body grows.

*Acne scars: Anyone affected by pimples or acne breakouts can suffer from acne scars. The types of acne scars are varied. There are ice pick scars, rolling scars, atrophic scars, boxcar scars, and hypertrophic or keloid scars.

*Hypertrophic scars: A type of raised scar that is very similar in appearance to keloid scars.

*Keloid scar: These scars are the result of an overly aggressive healing process and are more common on black-skinned individuals.

*Contracture scars: This type of scar limits mobility of muscles and tendons. It is caused by a burn and appears as a permanent tightening of the skin. Burn scars require special scar treatment (depending on severity). In grave cases, contracture scars can affect muscles and nerves. Children are especially susceptible and a high percent of the total burn cases in the US.

Scar removal has become so mainstream that now you can find treatments that offer gentle home exfoliation in place of more drastic artificial skin removal treatments, such as surgical scar removal methods. The choice you make will depend on a number of factors, including your type of scar, how old it is, and your skin's own natural healing process.
