Cosmetic Scar Treatments

Dermabrasion is a surgical procedure where the skin is frozen and then abraded away with a special instrument. The new skin that grows as a result of this action is new and smooth. Dermabrasion was first developed to specifically attack acne scars, pock marks and scars.

Pros: One session does the trick to diminish the visibility of scars.

Cons: Dermabrasion requires the administration of either local or even general anesthesia. Recovery time includes 7-10 days of healing, plus an additional 5-6 weeks for the complete disappearance of pinkness. Dermabrasion has little effect with burn scars.

Microdermabrasion is a procedure that combines abrasion and suction to exfoliate away dead skin cells and the superficial layer of skin of the epidermis. This process stimulates the regeneration of healthy skin cells that replace the old and damaged ones removed during the procedure.

Pros: The procedure is quick and requires little recovery time. The skin is irritated to a lesser degree.

Cons: More than 1 treatment is needed (you're looking at 4-8 sessions). Follow-up treatments are required for maintenance.

Steroid Injections are used in the treatment of keloid and hypertrophic scars, the steroid mixes with the scar tissue, minimizing inflammation and collagen growth. This collagen buildup can contribute to protruding scar tissue as well as the itchiness and flakiness often associated with scars.

Pros: Works well with keloid and hypertrophic scar removal.

Cons: Steroid use can cause thinning and weakening of the skin. This type of injection does not work for atrophic scars. Collagen injections are being studied to raise sunken areas, however, results are short-lived.

Laser Treatment is available for the different types of scars. Generally, during the session, a surgeon moves the laser along the scar tissue, removing a layer of skin that covers the protruding scar tissue and exposing new skin. It is an effective hypertrophic acne scar treatment. Lasers used for atrophic scars stimulate new collagen growth in the skin.

Pros: Effective on both atrophic and hypertrophic scars. It couples well with other facials or skin treatments, allowing you to combine both facility and anesthesia costs.

Cons: Hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation are common side effects. Also, those with psoriasis, cystic acne and dermatitis, among others, should avoid laser treatment.

Scar Revision refers to a set of surgical techniques that are conducted to enhance the appearance of scar tissue, blending it in with surrounding skin. Hypertrophic treatment scar revision surgery specifically describes the process of taking scar tissue and changing the incision line to create a less obvious scar.

Pros: Scar revision is versatile and can be performed on tissue all over the body. Works well for places that are highly visible. Results are permanent.

Cons: Time involved can be hours and include anesthesia.

Silicone, available as a gel or in sheets, removes extra scar tissue and lightens darkened scars. The reasons for why silicone works are still not fully known.
